Topic Guide
Jesus talked about money more than almost any other topic. Here is what Scripture actually says — about wealth, generosity, debt, contentment, and the financial legacy you will leave.
The Bible contains over 2,000 references to money and possessions — more than on faith, prayer, or love. This is not because money is more important than those things, but because where your money goes is a reliable indicator of where your heart actually is. "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Matthew 6:21).
The Christian view of money is countercultural in both directions: it resists both the prosperity gospel (God wants you to be wealthy) and ascetic spirituality (money is inherently corrupting). What Scripture offers is something more nuanced — money is a tool, stewardship is a calling, generosity is a practice, and contentment is a discipline.
Jesus addressed money in 16 of his 38 parables — more than on heaven and hell combined. His consistent teaching: you cannot serve both God and money (Matthew 6:24), money reveals where your heart actually is (Matthew 6:21), the rich young ruler was told to sell everything (Mark 10:21), and the widow's two coins were commended over large gifts (Mark 12:41-44). The pattern: money is not neutral — it either serves God or competes with him.
"No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money."
Matthew 6:24Proverbs 13:22 says "a good person leaves an inheritance for their children's children." This is one of the most practically relevant verses about money in the entire Old Testament — it frames financial planning not as selfish accumulation but as generational love. The inheritance you leave (or fail to leave) is a statement about what you valued and who you loved.
For many families, one of the most significant practical applications of this verse is ensuring that end-of-life costs are planned for. Social Security pays only $255 at death. A funeral costs $7,000–$12,000. Families who have planned ahead consistently report that it was one of the most loving things they ever did.
